Headaches, skin rashes, tinnitus, sleepless nights, and brain fog—these are among the symptoms people associate with electromagnetic field (EMF) exposure. Why do people report such different reactions, and could genetics offer clues?  Join Bob Miller, BCTN for a discussion about the questions his research is exploring.  This webinar will consider how our individual biology might interact with environmental exposures, and what we still need to learn about those connections.

Think of your genes as part of your body’s instruction book. They provide directions for making proteins, including enzymes—the tiny helpers that carry out chemical reactions throughout the body. Some genetic differences can change how these helpers work; others have little or no effect. Using a few examples, Bob will explain what it can mean for a particular process to run too quickly, too slowly, or less effectively. He will then explore whether differences in the body’s energy production, control of inflammation, and protective systems could help guide research into the symptoms people report. Looking at genetics is not about blaming the person. It is about investigating one possible part of a much larger picture.

We will also explore the tiny “gates” that control calcium entering our cells (known as Voltage Gated Calcium Channels), including those made using instructions from the genes often called “CAC” genes.  Why are researchers interested in them when studying EMF exposure? How might changes in cell signaling or energy supply affect the way nerves send messages and settle afterward?  We will discuss the state of current research—what is known and is still being investigated—about the connections between everyday EMF exposure, these biological processes, and reported symptoms.
